Literature Text

Tiny black bodies dotted the grass, like ebony candies scattered on the sidewalk.  They looked like beads, shining in the stormy gray sunlight.  They traveled with determination, blatently ignoring obstacles and marching right through them.

The ants left and came back, left and came back.  When they'd return, they'd be carrying something to eat on their backs or inside their crab's-claw mouths.  They went straight to their anthill, without pausing except to avoid collision with other ants.  If all the food had been cleared out from one area, they would travel farther even if there was danger there.  The ones that did not come back were not remembered.

In the distance, there were children playing catch with a Frisbee.  They were probably brother and sister.  Dressed in bright colors meant to be seen, they were easy to spot and easy to be set apart.  On their faces were smiles and in their voices was a playful teasing when a throw was badly aimed or was not caught.  Their parents were probably in their home nearby, preparing lunch or watching T.V.

The ants are not as feasibly distinguished.  Females are treated equally to the males, except for the queen.  She is served first because she is most important.  There are no family ties except for pride in the fact that the species will go on for another generation.  There are no feelings except for hunger, thirst, and physical pain.  There are no smiles.

Running out of the park to their home, the children race each other down the hill.  Their motive is to win so they can gloat at the loser.  They think nothing of having a meal whenever they need one.  And afterward they go outside again to do something merely because they feel like it.

I guess that's the difference between surviving and thriving.  Purpose.
I was trying to explain this to someone a couple nights ago. Maybe this will make it easier to understand.
